Graduate students enrolled in the Nova Scotia Educational Leadership Consortium Modules can use these professional development experiences towards a graduate credit through Independent Study in the following way:

  1. First, complete any two of the six NSELC Modules
  2. Find an instructor willing to supervise an Independent Study related to content of the NSELC Modules completed.  It is the responsibility of graduate students to inform their Independent Study supervisor about the content of the modules (subject areas and learning strategies or modes of inquiry employed).
  3. Negotiated the content of the Independent Study with the supervisor
  4. Enroll in GEDU 6151, GEDU 6152 or GEDU 6153 following approved procedures.

Purposes:

Completion of an Independent study related to professional development experiences with the NSELC Modules will encourage graduate students to:

  1. Reflect on and explore further the implications of their professional development experiences with the NSELC.
  2. Explore the connections between their graduate studies and assuming a leadership role relative to these studies.

Examples:

The following examples are intended only to stimulate ideas.  There is no end to possibilities.

Example A:

A graduate student enrolled in an MEd or MA in Literacy Education might explore notions of leadership in NSELC modules and design a plan to assume a leadership role in their school.  For example, they might design workshops for their school to introduce and promote current literacy curriculum.

Example B:

A graduate student enrolled in an MEd or MA in Educational Foundations might explore the presuppositions about schooling, society and teaching/learning processes in the leadership Modules, whether stated explicitly or implicitly.  What is the purpose of schooling inherent in the Modules?  What is the desired relationship between school and society?  What is implied about the future of schooling in a rapidly changing society? And so on….
Depending on the content of the Independent Study negotiated with the supervisor, prerequisite courses may possibly be recommended.  The following two examples explore the place of prerequisites when negotiating and Independent Study related to the Modules

Example C:

A graduate student enrolled in an MEd or MA in Educational Psychology and who has also completed GEPY 6646 (Developmental Programming) might evaluate the modules completed in terms of consistency of theoretical stance.  If theoretical eclecticism is discovered, the student might design ways to optimize compatibility of competing theories.

Example D:
A graduate student enrolled in an MEd or MA in Curriculum Studies and who has also completed GEDU 6170 might research the impact of professional development experiences by interviewing colleagues who have also completed the Modules.  For example, in what ways have completing the Modules impacted the fellow professionals’ curriculum practices in their respective schools?
